India bestows its highest diaspora honour on Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist Ramesh Chotai

Toronto, January 23, 2019: His Excellency Shri Ram Nath Kovind, President of the Republic of India, today conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA), the highest honour bestowed on non-resident Indians, by the Government of India on Mr. Ramesh Chotai at a glittering ceremony held at Varanasi, India.

Pramod Goyal, President, Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC), in his congratulatory message said, “It is with immense pleasure that I convey to you, on behalf of the Board and the members of the Chamber, our warm congratulations for having been awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award by the Government of India. We are extremely proud of this achievement which not only honors your remarkable contributions but also your commitment to the Indo Canadian community. We celebrate with you this great accomplishment.”

Our Chamber is extremely happy that Chamber’s former President and Current Advisory Board member, Mr. Chotai, has been recognized for his outstanding work as an entrepreneur and philanthropist. We are proud to share that it’s the fourth time in last seven years, that the Chamber/or its member have been conferred the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award by the Indian Government. 

Mr. Chotai came to Canada in 1972 and started as a pharmacist/manager at an Oshawa pharmacy. He started Bromed Pharmaceuticals in 1976, Bromed is committed to providing high quality, innovative & cost-effective healthcare products. He served as President – Hindu Temple and Cultural Centre, Mississauga, Vice President – Canadian Museum of Hindu Civilization, Chairperson Canada India Foundation and Co-Chair Trillium Hospital Foundation where he raised substantial funds. Mr. Chotai is also a recipient of several other awards including the Ontario Govt’s Voluntary Service Award and ICCC’s President’s Award in 2004, and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Award in 2013. 

Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce, being one of the oldest and the largest diaspora organizations in Canada, is proud that a prominent member of the Chamber who has had the unique distinction of serving as President and Current Advisory board member has been further recognized through this prestigious global diaspora award from the Government of India.
