It was a rare privilege for me to be invited by the Canadian House of Commons’ International Trade Committee earlier this month to make a presentation on Multiculturalism and International Trade.
The International Trade Committee of the Canadian House of Commons is in the process of consulting different bilateral chambers of commerce to understand the impact of multiculturalism on trade and to device mechanisms to deepen and sustain this impact. In particular, the committee is analyzing the following:
- Impact of diaspora communities on trade and economic growth in Canada
- The economic benefits of diversity and inclusion in trade
|
- How Canadians successfully trade with their countries of origin
- How diaspora drives exports
- The ways the federal government can support trade of this nature
In my presentation as the President of Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC), I emphasized the catalytic role that the Chamber has been performing in ensuring that the Indo-Canadian diaspora is positively engaged in promoting bilateral trade relations between Canada and India.
I elucidated the measures that the ICCC had undertaken over the last four decades in promoting bilateral trade, and in particular, stressed upon the tangible outcomes of the annual India Mission which provides an opportunity for Canadian small businesses to forge linkages with Indian small businesses. Many Canadian suburban cities are now participating in the India Mission to establish direct connections with India. The India Mission is a multi-sector, multi city trade mission to India organised annually, which one of the initiative to boost the trade between two countries. Mr. Sanjay Brahmbhatt, Director, International Trade, Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC), also accompanied me to Ottawa and was present during the formal session with the International Trade Committee.

The vibrancy of Canada’s cultural and people-to-people ties with India is a competitive advantage that has yet to be fully tapped for the benefit of Canadians and Indians alike. Canada counts more than a million Indo-Canadians comprising 3 percent of the Canadian population and $8 billion in annual trade. Deepening economic engagement now is the key to turning that strength in cultural diversity into an economic one for long-term growth, prosperity and more middle-class jobs for Canadians.
India has long standing friendly bilateral relations with Canada. Though geographically separated by a large distance, the historical ties between the two countries date back to the late 19th Century, when Indians began migrating in small numbers to British Columbia in Canada. Trade and investment relations between India and Canada are yet to realise their full potential. Given enormous complementarities, a concerted effort to boost bilateral trade and investment from both sides would provide a fruitful outcome.
To that end, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of International Trade; the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development; and the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, were on a trade mission to India from November 13 to 17, 2017, along with a delegation of Canadian business people.
