It's time to nominate a deserving candidate to the

    ICCC's Annual Awards

March is when our Chamber receives nominations for the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Awards. It is a glorious tradition that launched more than 25 years ago when the ICCC began honouring achievers with its annual awards. Over the years, the awards have become coveted and prestigious. We continue to honour exceptional Indo-Canadians in eleven categories and an independent advisory board decides who wins in each category. The Chamber’s board and its staff do not have any role in the selection.

Over the years, the awards have grown to encompass many spheres including entrepreneurs, professionals, technology, corporate executive, young achiever, humanitarian, lifetime and of course the member award. What is equally pertinent is that the ICCC has been among the first organisations to acknowledge crucial role that women play in all spheres and have been awarding women entrepreneurs and professionals for several years. The selection process has remained stringent and on occasions, a category has gone unrepresented when the advisory board has not found any suitable candidate in a particular category.

One of the most amazing aspects of the ICCC Annual Awards is that the awardees recognised by the ICCC subsequently go on to achieve greater glories. In that sense, the ICCC has been a talent spotter, especially in the spheres of young achievers and technology awards categories, and no less important is the role of the awards in bringing to the attention to the mainstream of the Canadian society.

Canada - India collaboration in the mining sector

India's mining minister Hon. Narendra Tomar visits PDAC

Hon. Minister Tomar with Consul General Dinesh Bhatia, High Commissioner Vikas Swarup,
members of the Indian delegation with ICCC President Kanwar Dhanjal & ICCC Board members

The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) in collaboration with the Consulate General of India in Toronto hosted a business reception in the honour of Hon. Narendra Singh Tomar, India’s Minister of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Mines earlier this week.

The Hon. Minister is visiting Canada to participate in the annual PDAC International Convention, Trade Show & Investors Exchange held in Toronto. The Hon. Minister is leading a high-powered delegation comprising India’s public sector mining companies as well as senior-level government of India officials of the rank of Additional and Joint Secretaries.

The reception was attended by the Indo-Canadian business community of the Greater Toronto Area and the Indian diplomatic corps. His Excellency Vikas Swroop, the High Commissioner of India in Ottawa was present, as was the Consul General of India in Toronto Dinesh Bhatia.

Speaking on the occasion Hon. Minister Tomar said that the mining sector is a priority area for the BJP government in New Delhi and the use of latest technology will bring further transparency and better monitoring in the mining sector.

He emphasized that the Modi government has already accomplished a lot so far but there is always more scope for doing better and fast work, as contribution of the mineral sector towards the growth of the GDP is significant and has to be improved further in collaboration with the States.

He said, with the Amendment in the MMDR Act in 2015, the Auctions of mines so far has led to an additional revenue of over ₹ 122 billion accruing to the States during the life span of the mines in 50 years.

In addition, the amount collected in the DMF funds in the Districts affected by the mining activities is over ₹100 billion, which will be spent in the development of these districts and the people of these districts.

His Excellency Vikas Swroop in his brief speech said that the recent visit by Canada’s Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau to India, and the joint statement issued on the occasion of his visit by Canada and India emphasizes the significance that both countries accord to the bilateral ties.

He lauded the role that the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce has been performing in fostering bilateral ties between the two countries.

The Consul General Dinesh Bhatia in his remarks said that Canada and India can help each other in the mining sector by utilising existing synergies in the sector. Canada can provide both investment avenues for Indian companies as well as technological knowhow to Indian companies in the sector.

He listed the minerals in which Canada leads the world, and said that India, in its quest of rapid development, needs all these minerals.

Kanwar Dhanjal, President of the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC), in his remarks, said that In the mining sector, our journey of cooperation began a decade ago when during India and Canada Foreign Office Consultations held in Ottawa in December 2008, the Indian side conveyed its interest for a broader MoU on Mining between the two countries.

The specific areas of interest for India include potash, urea, gold, diamonds, oil and gas, uranium, clean coal technology, mining prospecting technology, etc. A MoU between the India’s ministry of mines, and Canada’s department of natural resources, concerning cooperation in the field of earth sciences and mining was signed in 2010 in Toronto.

He added, “Over the last decade, several significant developments have occurred in the mining sector both in Canada and in India, and it would be necessary to keep in mind these developments while charting the future course of cooperation between our two economies in this sector. The Indian mining sector is being developed in a sustainable manner, with special attention being given to the needs of the indigenous people on whose traditional lands mining activities are to occur.”

Several past presidents of the Chamber and member of the incumbent board were present at the event.

ICCC's massive support to India Business Forum

Over 70 ICCC members to accompany PM Justin Trudeau to India

    Mumbai: February 20, 2018 ● Delhi: February 22, 2018

Over 70 members of the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC), led by President Kanwar Dhanjal, will be participating in the India Business Forum meetings in Mumbai and Delhi that are being organised during Canada's Prime Minister Right Honourable Justin Trudeau's visit to India.

PM Trudeau is in India from February 17 to February 23, 2018. The visit will provide an opportunity to strengthen Canada India economic ties. He will make stops in Agra, Amritsar, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. During his tour the Canadian Prime Minister will also visit the Taj Mahal, Sri Harmandir Sahib — also known as the Golden Temple —  the Swaminarayan Akshardham temple in Gujarat and the Jama Masjid in Delhi during his tour. Trudeau will meet with Modi, and take part several business roundtables focused on boosting trade and investment between the two countries. Trudeau will promote empowering women and girls and strengthening Canada and India's economic ties, says his office.

Kanwar Dhanjal, President, ICCC, expressed immense satisfaction at the response the ICCC received in enrolling entrepreneurs and professionals as delegates to participate in the Business Forums. "It shows the tremendous enthusiasm that the private sector has for the potential prospects of trade and commerce between Canada and India," Mr. Dhanjal said.

A majority of the ICCC's board of directors are participating in the business forums in the two cities. The ICCC has been working actively to promote the Prime Minister's India trip and has also recruited delegates for the two forums. In doing so, the ICCC has succeeded in fulfilling its mandate of fostering bilateral economic relations between Canada and India and to concomitantly create business and professional opportunities for its members and stakeholders. Over the last year and more, the ICCC has organised a series of events that focus on promotion of bilateral trade and services. This includes the recently-held ICCC Winter Expo as well as the Canada-India Business Symposium held in 2017.

Canada and India enjoy a special relationship that is based on a common democratic values and burgeoning economic trade that has been growing exponentially during the last decade. Since September 2016, there have been eleven ministerial visits to India, including, most recently, a trade mission led by Minister of International Trade Hon. François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Hon. Navdeep Bains, and Minister of Transport Hon. Marc Garneau, in November 2017.

Canada-India relations have been on an upward trajectory with both the Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Trudeau keen to foster a more meaningful relationship that goes beyond the optics. While it is not certain that the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection agreement will be finalized during PM Trudeau's visit, there is heightened expectation that the trip will lead to more intense commercial and economic ties, with the private sector playing an important role in the process.

An indication of the strong ties was evident in January 2018, when the Indian government's union cabinet chaired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Canada for cooperation in the field of Science & Technology.  The MoU will provide a mechanism and help to foster scientific cooperation between R&D and academic institutions of India and Canada.

An innovative model of R&D cooperation between India and Canada will be implemented under a MoU concluded by the Department of Science and Technology with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada. Under this MoU, the India-Canada Centre for Innovative Multidisciplinary Partnership to Accelerate Community Transformation and Sustainability (IC-IMPACTS) programme will be supported to promote India-Canada multidisciplinary research partnerships.

The R&D projects will be aimed at accelerating social transformation by providing solutions through application of science and technology. The participants will include researchers from scientific organizations, academia and R&D laboratories from India and Canada. Identified areas of mutual cooperation include safe and sustainable infrastructure and integrated water management. This will help to develop institutional networking and support the establishment of connections between scientific organizations, scientists and specialists of India and Canada.

Promoting Canadian Strengths in the context of India’s Policy Agenda

Canada’s Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau is in India on a seven-day official visit. His visit follows visits by 11 of his cabinet colleagues to India since Trudeau was elected the Prime Minister in 2015. Accompanying the Prime Minister on this India trip are Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi, Small Business Minister Bardish Chagger, Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains and Science Minister Kirsty Duncan. Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan. Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland will be part of the delegation in India.

Beside his engagements in New Delhi, Prime Minister will visit Agra, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Amritsar. Justin Trudeau will be the first Canadian prime minister to visit Gujarat. In Mumbai and Delhi, the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce and other bilateral organisations in the Canada-India space such as the Indo-Canadian Business Chamber, the Canada- India Business Council and the Canada-India Foundation organised two business forums where the Canadian Prime Minister interacted with entrepreneurs, corporate honchos and government officials.

The theme for the Mumbai forum was ‘Moving from Confluence to Congruence’. While welcoming the guests at the Mumbai forum, I emphasized that as the President of the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce, a four-decades-old bilateral chamber that has devoted its energies to promoting and advocating on behalf of small entrepreneurs, this move to congruence is possible if both the Canadian and the Indian establishments that are involved in policy formulations understand the vital role that small businesses in both the countries can play to foster a better bilateral economic integration.

Trudeau must make haste on trade with India

     By Colin Robertson

A former diplomat, Robertson is Vice President and fellow at the Canadian Global Affairs Institute

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's visit to India this week will reinforce and underline our growing people-to-people ties. The economic relationship is less buoyant, but if Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi can deliver on his promised domestic reforms, there is the potential for more two-way trade and investment.

With stops in Agra, Amritsar, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, as well as New Delhi, it will be a rare session that does not include some reference to family living or studying in Canada.

The Indian diaspora includes several members in the Canadian Parliament, with four members in the Trudeau cabinet. Nearly 4 per cent of Canadians claim Indian decent, with 40,000 Indians migrating to Canada last year. The 124,000 Indians studying in Canada are our second-largest group of foreign students. No surprise that tourism is also on the rise, with more than 210,000 Indians visiting Canada last year. There are daily and non-stop flights.

    India definitely deserves Canadian attention.

India will soon surpass China in population, with one-sixth of humanity. It is also the world's largest democracy, which is a cacophony of caste and creeds. The two Prime Ministers will empathize over the challenges of managing federations with strong sectional and regional pressures. Some of these, such as the Sikh separatist movement, play into Canadian affairs.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos last month, Mr. Modi was forceful in his embrace of globalization. He described his "New India" reform agenda and its pillars of structural reform: technological governance; physical infrastructure; business facilitation; and inclusive development. Designed to give "good administration and better amenities," Canada needs to identify the niche opportunities within each pillar.

Trade and investment will figure in every discussion. Investment from Canadian pension funds in real estate and other sectors has picked up in the past couple of years.

With its steady GDP growth, India is expected to become the third-largest consumer market by 2025.

What does it mean to lead a trade mission to India? I have been humbled by the experience after returning from my first India Mission. We had a series of meetings with our Partners in Success, we forged linkages with new Partners in Success by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Trade Promotion Council of India and the Mohali Industries Association. We also participated in the second Bengal Global Business Summit. We also had meetings with four Chief Ministers of Indian states and were able to avail of the opportunity to understand first-hand the significant measures these Indian states have undertaken to move ahead with their economic development.

India Mission 2018 was by all accounts a tremendous success. We were able to successfully visit Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, New Delhi, Chandigarh and Kolkata during the two-week mission and we were able to focus on the sectors the ICCC had chosen to promote during the mission – Agro and Food Processing Industries, Advanced Manufacturing, Financial Services, Education, Business Immigration and Skills Development. We were greeted with enthusiastic response in every city, in every meeting. It was personally gratifying to me to witness the enthusiasm evinced by Capt. Amarinder Singh, the Chief Minister of Punjab, to our proposal of a more intense collaboration between Indo-Canadian entrepreneurs and the state of Punjab. He immediately announced the formation of an investors’ help desk dedicated for this purpose.

    Path to Prosperity
    Resetting Canada's Growth Trajectory

Final report by Canada's Advisory Council on Economic Growth

How can we accelerate the growth of the Canadian economy and improve the prosperity of all Canadians over the coming 10 to 15 years?

That was the question posed by Canada’s Minister of Finance when he convened the Advisory Council on Economic Growth in early 2016. The Council’s mission is to examine the long-term potential of Canada’s economy and, based on its findings, to make recommendations for improving the prospects for inclusive economic growth.

The Council is convinced the formula that drove the past growth of the Canadian economy—and supported steady improvements in our standard of living—is unlikely to be sufficient for the future. Like many other advanced economies, Canada faces the pressure of an aging population, technological disruption to many sectors of the economy, and the rapid shift of global economic power to Asia.

Current trends suggest that annual GDP growth in Canada will average only 1.5 percent over the next 50 years—half the rate of the past 50. Left unchecked, the slower pace of growth would have a profound impact on the prosperity of Canadian families and the outlook for them and their children.

This does not have to be the case.

Canada’s numerous natural advantages, coupled with the opportunities created by a rapidly changing world, offer the potential to stimulate new waves of investment, innovation, and job creation, unlocking a new formula for growth and prosperity. The challenge that the Council set for itself was to identify bold solutions that could jolt the economy, stimulate inclusive growth, and help raise the quality of life for all Canadians, targeting a $15,000 increase in median annual pre-tax household income above current projections by 2030.

This document lays out a third release of Council recommendations for resetting the country’s long-term growth trajectory for the benefit of all Canadians. In October 2016, the Council released its initial findings and its first wave of three recommendations. They included increasing investment in infrastructure, a plan for raising foreign direct investment in Canada, and a set of proposals for attracting the immigrant talent Canada will need to fuel its growth.

Toronto: The delegates of the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce’s (ICCC) India Mission 2018 continued with their high profile meetings in India. Led by ICCC President, Kanwar Dhanjal, the delegation members met Capt. Amarinder Singh, the Chief Minister of Punjab, last week. The meeting resulted in the Punjab Chief Minister directing Punjab’s Department of Industries to explore the setting up of a designated help desk for people of Indian origin settled abroad, especially in Canada, to invest in Punjab.

CM Capt. Amarinder directed the Secretary, Industries and Commerce and CEO Invest Punjab, Rakesh Verma to do so. Urging the delegation, comprising the Indian diaspora, to suggest ways and means to further strengthen bilateral commerce and business ties between the two countries by scaling up trade, the Punjab Chief Minister suggested that they explore investment opportunities in sectors of mutual interest.

ICCC President Kanwar Dhanjal said such collaboration was possible in sectors such as Education, Skill Development, Agro-based Industry and Information Technology. Capt. Amarinder assured the delegation of continued synergy at all levels to ensure overall development in the core sectors of health, education, agriculture and skill development in Punjab through transfer of technology and forging of technical collaborations between Punjab and Canada.

Citing the government’s ‘Connect with Your Roots’ programme, which he launched during his UK visit in September last year, Capt. Amarinder said that this programme would go a long way to help connect youngsters, especially the third generation, who had roots here in Punjab.

It was an excellent forum to apprise them of the state’s glorious heritage, cultural legacy and rich traditions, he said, adding that a similar program should also be initiated for the youth whose parents/grandparents had immigrated to Canada from Punjab.

Emphasising the need for regular interaction of students, traders, businessmen and progressive farmers from state with their peers in Canada, the Chief Minister said both Punjab and Canada should facilitate frequent exchange of such delegations, based on their expertise and experience, for mutual benefit.

The Chief Minister also suggested introduction of certain courses and changes in current academic curriculum to conform with the Canadian education system in order to enable the local youth to get gainful employment in Canada.

Assuring Capt. Amarinder of their wholehearted support to the government’s efforts to promote development and prosperity in Punjab, the visiting Canadian delegation led by Kanwar Dhanjal said that, as the sons and daughters of the Indian soil, it was their moral duty to contribute something tangible for the growth and prosperity of Punjab. They emphasized the need for concerted efforts to boost the level of trade between Punjab and Canada.

Dhanjal apprised the Chief Minister of the Canadian technology for converting paddy straw into plywood, which would not only help the state get rid of this menace but also help supplement the income of the farmers multifold.

Taking part in the deliberations, MLA Fatehjang Singh Bajwa underscored the need to give a fillip to the small scale sector to generate employment opportunities for the state’s youth.

Prominent among others who attended the meeting were Advisor to Chief Minister B I S Chahal, MLA Bagha Purana Darshan Singh Brar, Addition Chief Secretary Home Affairs, N S Kalsi, Principal Secretary to CM Tejveer Singh, CEO Invest Punjab and Secretary, Industries and Commerce Rakesh Verma, MD PIDB D K Tiwari, MD Punjab Agro Vikas Garg besides members of delegation including its Jag Badwal, Naresh Kumar Chavda, Pranav Patel, Priank Garg, Pradyuman Jhala, Sameer Sharma, and Jagdish Grewal.

Subsequent to this meeting, the ICCC delegation also met the speaker of the Punjab legislative assembly Rana KP Singh. During the course of parleys, the issue of strengthening trade relations between Punjab and Canada was debated upon.

Welcoming the delegation, Rana KP Singh said that a congenial atmosphere has been created for trade and business activities in Punjab under the leadership of the Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh and many pro-industrial policies are being implemented in the State. He further said that the Indian community in general and Punjabi community in particular has made a lot of progress in Canada and this progress has also rubbed off positively on the Canadian economy. The Speaker appealed to the delegation members that the NRI Punjabi industrialists should come forward to contribute to the maximum extent in the development of their motherland Punjab.

Toronto: Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) launched its five-city India Mission 2018 on January 8, 2018.

The Mission will be visiting Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Chandigarh and Kolkata. The sectors of focus on the 2018 mission are Agro and Food Processing, ICT and Advanced Manufacturing, Financial Services, Education, Business Immigration and Skills Development.

The highlight of the Mission will be participation in the Bengal Global Summit in Kolkata.

Kanwar Dhanjal with Vijay Kalantri of AIAI & CG Jordan Reeves

Speaking on the occasion, Kanwar Dhanjal, President, ICCC, said, “As an annual feature, the Chamber has continued with its efforts to take economic ties between Canada and India to the next level.” He added that the primary focus is to build linkages between Canadian and Indian businesses and familiarize Canadian businesses with the tremendous opportunities that have opened up in India.

The ICCC President explained that India Mission 2018 has special significance because the Indian economy continues to grow at a stupendous rate. A recent World Bank report states the fundamentals of the Indian economy remain strong, with robust economic growth, strong fiscal consolidation, and low current account deficit, higher agricultural output, growing FDI, low inflation and higher wages in rural areas. Foreign investors are flocking to the Indian capital markets in a big way with a net inflow of over $30 billion of so-called hot money in 2017, with equities alone getting over $8 billion – an amount bigger than the cumulative investment of the previous two years.

    December 2017

    Letter from the President

     Kanwar Dhanjal

In the first week of December, the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) created a new precedent by organising the first annual SME Expo in Toronto.  The ICCC’s inaugural SME Expo 2017 was a successful attempt by the new leadership of the Chamber to consolidate its programming and make it more business focussed rather than diaspora focussed. The SME Expo replaced the Winter Gala. The exposition attracted nearly two dozen exhibitors that included small businesses as well as large corporations that are the Chamber’s Partners in Success.

The Expo also included two panel discussions. The Honourable Jeff Leal, Minister for Small Business, Ontario, emphasized the need to promote small businesses with a view to create employment opportunities and lauded the role of Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) in consistently advocating the cause of Canadian small and medium entrepreneurs as a part of its mandate.

In his extempore remarks, His Excellency Dinesh Bhatia, the Consul General of India in Toronto, credited the ICCC for understanding the emerging dynamics of the Canadian and the Indian economies and the role small businesses are and will be playing in these economies in the future. He said ICCC has pioneered the advocacy and promotion of the small businesses as a sector for the last decade-and-a-half and carved a niche for itself by doing so.

In the New Year, our Chamber will be leading a successful India Mission 2018 – the seventh consecutive year when the Chamber would be doing so.  India Mission 2018 will commence on January 6 and visit five Indian cities before returning to Toronto January 18. The business mission will visit Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Chandigarh, and Kolkata. The mission will participate in Bengal Global Business Summit in Kolkata and other key global and diaspora programs in the other cities on the itinerary.

    India in Canada's worldview

India hardly figures in current discourse on Canadian foreign policy. Yet, the two countries are important to each other: one, a source of investment, technology and energy, the other an attractive market. The current challenge is to conclude negotiations on long-pending trade and investment agreements

    By Rajiv Bhatia

As the Trudeau government completes two years in November 2017, uncertainty persists about the Canadian prime minister’s proposed visit to India. Canada and India are important to each other – Canada as a source of investment, technology and energy and as the home of 1.3 million Canadians of Indian origin, and India as an increasingly attractive market, a large and successful democracy and a global player. Yet, today’s mainstream discourse on Canada’s conduct of foreign relations does not include India – barring the occasional mention. Likewise, Canada goes missing from analyses of Indian foreign policy in the Indian media. Bilateral Track II dialogue on foreign policy issues hardly exists, reflecting the low priority each country accords the other.

A two-week sojourn in Toronto, with the opportunity to meet a range of scholars, diplomats and other experts, yielded many insights into the existing state of the bilateral. It reinforced the impression that shared values, the G20 platform and the Commonwealth connection form the background to this bond. Driven by these obvious commonalities, the two countries have cooperated well, culminating in Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Canada in April 2015. This gesture reciprocated several visits by Canadian VIPs including PM Harper and the governor general. After Trudeau became PM in November of that year, ministerial visitors to India have kept the momentum going, but interaction at the highest political level is still awaited.

The Indo-Canadian community, which is growing in size and influence, with four ministers and 19 MPs at the federal level, favours a closer bilateral relationship. Some elements, though, that are interested in persisting with the fundamentalist agenda of the past, remain keen on holding the partnership back, and even received a boost in their mission when the Ontario assembly adopted a motion in April 2017, which described the 1984 anti-Sikh riots as “genocide”. This immediately evoked negative reactions in India. The official spokesman stated: “We regret this misguided motion which is based on a limited understanding of India, its constitution, society, ethos, rule of law and the judicial process,” adding that New Delhi’s views were conveyed to the government and political leadership in Canada.
